Today I am praying for the repose of the soul of Cardinal Siri. Any claim he may have had to the papacy is now gone. God has reminded you of the Imperfect Council, and then removed Cardinal Siri from this world. This is obviously providence. We welcome you back to the Imperfect Council, which you considered many years ago. As I wrote some time back, both the Siri solution and ht eImperfect Council are acts of humility. I thank God, that He has introduced you to people, who considered humbling themselves into again submitting to Papal Authority through Cardinal Siri. It is your duty now to go to them and tell them, that all hope is not lost. We have the Imperfect Council, which is of necessity. During a sede vacante, prayers are to be said for the election of a Pope. (There is even a votive Mass for this very purpose in the Missal.) I strongly recommend that these prayers be publicly said at St. Jude’s.
St. Jude’s, as I understand it, has always been assisted greatly by Dvine help, when any problem beset it. This is obviously providence. St. Jude’s being the only Catholic Church I know of in the hands of Catholics, is obviously the best place to hold the Imperfect Council. God has so ordered things, that this appears to be His will. Wouldn’t it be wonderful, that these Catholics, who have labored against all problems to preserve the Faith, whole and entire, would have their work crowned by having the Church restored from their own shrine? There is no other group of people, that professes the Catholic Faith in any manner approaching the way it is professed in St. Jude’s. Most would happily follow after a priest into his pet error or heresy. When this is announced for the place of the election, you may very well do without the services of a priest, until the Pope appoints a Pastor for St. Jude’s, which I consider a likely result. However, most true Catholics have not seen a Catholic priest in years, nor have they had the opportunity to see one. The sad state of affairs with Fr. Khoat is a perfect example. From being right on track he fell into heresy and schism before our very eyes. Of course, as St. Athanasius observed, they have the churches, but we have the Faith. In our case, they have the priests, but we have the Faith. One can go to Heaven without priests, but it is impossible to get to Heaven without the Faith.
How are things going, otherwise? I am sure you are glad to not to have to sweat every Sunday, wondering if Fr. Khoat is going to preach schism or heresy from the altar. I know that position is not enjoyable, especially since one, as trustee, would probably be bound to yank a heretic physically from the pulpit. If this is not required, one would have to immediately leave the Church, because to stay would be to cooperate I the sin and offense of another. “A person who cooperates in an offense by neglect of his office only, is liable in proportion to the obligation which he had in virtue of his office to prevent he offense.” (Canon 2209, paragraph 6) In the Canonical sense, you trustees, do not hold an office, because no one with appropriate jurisdiction appointed you as trustees. However, in the eyes of the Faithful you hold an office of trust, whereby they expect you to bring in only Catholic priests, who profess the Faith, whole and entire. This is not a light obligation. If you knowingly bring in a heretic, of even a priest, who skirts the edge of heresy, you are guilty of a grace injustice to the Faithful, who look to you to provide them with a priest, who will give them sound doctrine, which not only is not heretical, but is in full conformity with Catholic teaching. We know, that Fr. Khoat cannot be trusted to provide us with sound teaching. Although he apparently does not wish to spread his dangerous ideas from the pulpit, he promotes his retreats, where his dangerous and heretical ideas are made available to the Faithful. As such, one could not allow him access to St. Jude’s for that reason alone, not to mention the fact, that heretics are forbidden to administer the Sacraments. (Canon 2294 and 2261. Also Canons 2264, 2259 and 984, paragraph 5. I am working on a comprehensive discussion of this whole matter, which I will make available to you, if you wish.)
You rightly praise Fr. Brey. If he is like his letters from the Homiletic and Pastoral Review, he must be fantastic. I have been reviewing Homiletic and Pastoral review, in preparation for a book, I am co-authoring, for the late fifties and the sixties. In the sixties, so far I have found three letters from Fr. Brey. Each one is quite good, especially considering, that few saw through Vatican II and the liturgical aberrations, that early. Not only does Fr. Brey write on important matters, he brings in good proof of his position, which is sadly lacking from Homiletic and Pastoral Review in this time period. I look forward to some day meeting Fr. Brey.
The book I am working on will cover where we are, and how to rectify the problem. I find, that no one has properly addressed the whole problem in a comprehensive manner. I don’t think it can be handled in a retreat or presentation, although one can certainly cover a lot of ground. (Your presentations on where we are and the vacancy of the Apostolic See is excellent. In fact, when you work in Fr. Barbara’s material it will be conclusive beyond any doubt, including unreasonable ones. Anyone, who rejects the truths presented will be obviously outside the Church. There is no contradicting such evidence.) There are questions, which NO-ONE had covered properly. In fact there is one area, which I think, that every modern Traditionalist author I have read is liberal. I plan to present my case in the book, so people can review the evidence and make an informed decision. We are required in this time of error to think for ourselves. We cannot trust priests to deliver the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We go the sources, the Pope, the Councils, the Fathers and Doctors. You cannot trust what I say, and take it on my say so alone. You are required under pain of sin to review my work and look for error. Further you are required to correct me, if I am wrong. This would hold true, if I were a priest or bishop, as St. Thomas teaches. In addition to the obligation you have from the Moral Law, I am adding to it my personal request, that you check my work. I find one does two things, when reviewing the work of another, if he does it honestly. First you will learn something, as you check the booksto see if what you are reading follows with what the Church teaches. Secondly you will improve your ability to defend the truths of our holy faith. We are the Church Militant, and as such required to defend Holy Mother Church, especially when her clergy have abandoned her, with a very few exceptions. You have another reason for reviewing my work, and that is the fact, that people look to you for guidance. You are held as knowledgeable, so you must make sure, that you are knowledgeable. It is not an easy job, but our salvation may depend on it. I find I must spend a lot of time with the books to be sure I know what the Church teaches.
I have some additional information, which backs up the claim, that Religious Liberty is considered by the New Church as doctrine from Homiletic and Pastoral Review. If you would like copies, I will happily make them available to you.
One last thing. In your book and presentation you go into the white dove and white pigeon. Within twenty-four hours of Cardinal Siri’s death, but before I heard about it, a white pigeon landed in our front yard. I am talking white from head to toe. All of us watched him our the front window for a while. I do not claim this means anything, but simply relate an amazing story.
I pray, that Almighty God is lenient with Cardinal Siri, and that Cardinal Siri is now in Heaven. I also pray, that God will guide us to a speedy and holy end to this interregnum, no matter when it started. We can leave the discussion of Siri to the historians, because there is no question now that there is a sede vacante with NO valid claimants to the Apostolic See. May God bless you, your family and the people at St. Jude’s. Please pray for me,,
